Your Child's DTC Approval Unlocks More Than You Think
When your child is approved for the Disability Tax Credit, it triggers a cascade of benefits — retroactive tax refunds, tax-free monthly payments, and government savings grants. Most families leave money on the table because they don't know what to ask for.
Free eligibility assessment. No upfront cost. Our fee is 25% of retroactive refunds only — collected after CRA approval.
Three Benefits. One Approval.
A single DTC approval for your child unlocks three separate financial benefits. Together, they can provide tens of thousands of dollars in support.
Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
Up to $40,000
Retroactive up to 10 years
The DTC provides a non-refundable tax credit of approximately $3,000–$4,000 per year. When approved retroactively, CRA reassesses up to 10 years of past tax returns — resulting in a significant lump-sum refund.
Child Disability Benefit (CDB)
Up to $3,411/year
Tax-free monthly payments
A tax-free monthly supplement to the Canada Child Benefit. Up to $284.25 per month per eligible child. Automatically triggered when your child's DTC is approved — no separate application needed.
Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)
Up to $4,500/year
Government grants & bonds
Once your child is DTC-approved, you can open an RDSP. The government contributes up to $3,500/year in matching grants and up to $1,000/year in bonds (income-tested, no contribution required). Grants can be carried forward up to 10 years.
The CDB Retroactive Claim Most Families Miss
CRA only auto-calculates the Child Disability Benefit for the current plus two previous benefit years. For the remaining years, you need to submit a written request — and most families never do.
Important: The Written Request Step
If your child's DTC is approved retroactively for more than 2 benefit years, you must send a written request to your CRA tax centre to receive the full retroactive CDB. Without this step, you only receive 2–3 years of retroactive CDB — even if your child was approved for 10 years of DTC.
Automatic: Current + 2 Years
When your child's DTC is approved, CRA automatically calculates CDB payments for the current benefit year plus the two previous benefit years. This happens without any action from you.
Written Request: Years 3–10
For benefit years before the automatic period, you must send a written request to your local CRA tax centre. Many families miss this step — leaving thousands of dollars unclaimed.
We Handle It For You
My Benefits Canada prepares and submits the retroactive CDB request on your behalf, ensuring you receive every dollar your family is entitled to — going back up to 10 years.
