Disability Tax Credit in Alberta: Alberta residents who qualify for the federal DTC also receive a provincial disability tax credit, providing an additional annual tax reduction on top of the federal credit. Alberta's flat 10% provincial tax rate means the provincial credit is among the most valuable in Canada.
For a comprehensive overview of the DTC, see our Complete Guide to the Disability Tax Credit in Canada.
DTC Benefits for Alberta Residents
Alberta is unique among Canadian provinces in having a flat provincial income tax rate of 10% (for the first bracket). This means Alberta's provincial DTC credit is approximately $969 per year — nearly double what most other provinces provide. Combined with the federal credit, Alberta residents receive one of the highest total DTC benefits in Canada.
| Component | Adult | Child (Under 18) |
|---|---|---|
| Federal DTC credit | ~$1,521/yr | ~$1,521/yr |
| Federal child supplement | — | ~$887/yr |
| Alberta provincial credit | ~$969/yr | ~$969/yr |
| Alberta child supplement | — | ~$633/yr |
| Combined annual credit | ~$2,490/yr | ~$4,010/yr |
| 10-year retroactive | ~$24,900 | ~$40,100 |
For children, DTC approval also unlocks the Child Disability Benefit (up to $3,411/year tax-free) and the RDSP (up to $90,000 in lifetime government grants and bonds).
How the DTC Interacts with AISH
Alberta's Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program provides monthly financial assistance and health benefits to Albertans with a permanent disability that substantially limits their ability to earn a living. AISH and the DTC are separate programs — DTC approval does not automatically qualify you for AISH, and AISH eligibility does not guarantee DTC approval.
However, AISH recipients are often strong candidates for the DTC because the severity of disability required for AISH frequently meets CRA's threshold for a "marked restriction" in daily living activities. If you are currently receiving AISH, your existing medical documentation may provide strong evidence for a DTC application.
Important: retroactive DTC refunds may affect your AISH benefits. AISH has asset limits, and a large retroactive refund could temporarily push you over the threshold. Consider directing your retroactive refund into an RDSP (which is exempt from AISH asset calculations) to protect your monthly benefits.
Alberta-Specific Benefits Unlocked by the DTC
DTC approval in Alberta unlocks or enhances eligibility for several additional programs. The Alberta Child and Family Benefit provides quarterly payments to lower-income families, with enhanced amounts for families with children with disabilities. The Alberta Adult Health Benefit provides health coverage for lower-income Albertans. The Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) program provides financial support and services to families of children under 18 with disabilities.

How to Apply in Alberta
The application process is the same across Canada. Alberta residents benefit from the province's higher provincial credit rate — making the financial case for applying particularly strong. If you are receiving AISH, coordinate your DTC application timing carefully to protect your monthly benefits.
